ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how the leader at Fordbridge Community Primary School were inspired to take the Talk for Maths Mastery approach into their Year 1 classes, to maintain the children’s momentum of learning, particularly between the end of the Reception year and into Year 1, a critical transition point. Following the school’s participation in another Talk for Maths Mastery initiative, the Phase 1 team worked together to create a developmentally consistent approach to maths starting from the children’s centre with under-twos and progressing into Foundation 1, then Foundation 2 and into Year 1. This was all underpinned by the following important principles and key questions: having a strong overall vision, implementing the vision into year 1, what were the challenges?, what about the role of the adult in year 1?, how are children’s interests followed?, continuing continuous provision, and partnership between home and school.
