ABSTRACT

This research gathered data through qualitative interviewing of military spouses. The data have been analyzed through the lenses of Pierre Bourdieu, Michel Foucault (1926–1984), and Marxist/Socialist Feminist Theory (see Wright, 1993; Wharton, 1991). An investigation of the social spaces where the experiences occur, reveals extrinsic processes that lead to intrinsic change, and highlights the relationships between structure and agent, as spouses navigate the greedy institution of the military (Segal, 1986). Third-party symbolic violence invisibilizes the invisible, changing spouses from being the victim to being the perpetrator of their own symbolic violence.
