ABSTRACT

In the May 2014 European elections, the Spanish political party Podemos only registered three months earlier, won five seats and 1.2 million votes. Known as Spain’s 15-M Movement or Movement of the Outraged, Podemos had emerged from the turmoil caused by the Spanish economic and political crisis with a message of rupture directed against the austerity measures of political elite. The requirement of visibility in mediated representation refers to how far representatives can be seen to represent. Podemos’s first objective was to transform institutional spaces into effective sites for mediation of their self-representation. Authenticity, according to Taylor is the moral ideal of staying true to oneself. It is, therefore, necessary to build trust between politicians and the people, a trust that is continuously questioned and negotiated. The mediated relationship between politicians and the public depends to a great extent on the performance of authenticity that is carried out through the processes of mediation.
