ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an understanding of children’s role-play with technologies, including objects that simulate technologies and new innovative Internet-connected toys. It also provides a description of how pedagogical documentation can be used in order to make the complexity of role-playing understandable. The book discusses the theoretical discussion of the ways in which emotion is a central aspect of role-play. In order to consider the development of emotions, the development of the child is considered, including pre-birth. The book examines socio-dramatic play by exploring the necessary skills in reference to scenario and role development. It describes the term ‘Wave Play’, which was coined by Kingdon in order to describe some of the play activity that she has observed in two pack-away early childhood settings in England.
