ABSTRACT
This essay traces the interaction between traditional cremation practices in India, Western reactions and reform efforts, and wider status changes in Indian society as they both maintained and reshaped cremation practices during the later nineteenth century. A practice often regarded as stubbornly traditional was altered in several significant ways.
