ABSTRACT

The complexity of life in actual built environments often cannot be explained by causal connections. For example, even if many people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter months, we cannot predict that this or that person will experience SAD. But we can correlate winter conditions with a statistically significant group of people who experience SAD. This chapter correlates a) teacher satisfaction with classroom lighting and b) teachers’ self-reports of work productivity. Here, interiority relates to subjective perceptions of the subjects captured by a quantitative use of statistics. It demonstrates the generalizability of correlation research applicable to any situation in which discrete variables can be statistically related to each other.
