ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the intersection between food systems, agriculture, and environmental justice in social movements, activism, and scholarship. It begins with an overview of historical instances of these intersections: prior to the emergence of the environmental justice movement; amidst the evolution of the environmental justice frame; and as movements for food systems justice, including food justice and food sovereignty, emerged. A range of concerns and movements are addressed, including: indigenous peoples’ movements and practices surrounding environmental justice, food, and food sovereignty; farmworker organizing; urban agriculture; and consumer solidarity campaigns. The chapter then explores recent developments in the field and concludes with a discussion of future areas of concern connecting environmental justice, food, and agriculture with issues including climate change, gentrification, and Black Agrarianism.
