ABSTRACT

This paper is a call for action for speech pathologists to support the mental health needs of their clients impacted by stroke, especially people with aphasia. We draw on data primarily from Australia to explore the current shortfalls in the mental health services available or offered to people with aphasia post stroke. The paper first discusses the mental health needs of those with stroke and aphasia before considering the stepped care model for psychological services in stroke rehabilitation and opportunities for speech pathologists in providing this care. Finally, the research and practice priorities to achieve this goal are outlined.
