ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews advantages and points of critique of corpus-linguistic approaches to legal meaning. After a brief review of the problems of intuition-based and dictionary-based approaches to ordinary meaning, the chapter defines the notion of a corpus and the main corpus-linguistic methods before it turns to discussing corpus-linguistic applications to a variety of well-known cases revolving around the meaning of lexical items in statutory texts. In addition, the chapter addresses some prejudices and points of critique leveled against corpus methods in legal interpretation.
