ABSTRACT
Although product warnings have received attention in the forensic linguistics community (Tiersma 2002; Heaps and Henley 1999; Dumas 1990; Shuy 1990), the comprehensibility of complex documents in other areas have been less studied. Similarly, contracts have received attention (Tiersma 1999; Schane 2006). Yet there are numerous other complex documents that may also play a role in litigation and in forensic linguistics – for instance, complex documents also include mortgages and mortgage disclosure documents. This chapter will address the issues associated with readers and comprehension of complex documents, such as immigration instructions and forms, patent applications, and federally required notices and information disclosures to pension plan participants and stockholders or prospective stockholders. I will give an overview of the issues and procedures that a forensic linguist would follow in investigating the comprehensibility of these documents and in describing the different audiences for the documents.
