ABSTRACT
Forensic Linguistics is now a mature discipline, with three decades of dedicated research and publishing behind us and with a large but still rapidly increasing number of people worldwide having masters and doctoral qualifications in the discipline plus a growing number of them in full-time research and lecturing posts or positions in the legal or policing professions. It is, therefore appropriate to close this second edition of the Handbook by speculating about some of the advances that the next ten years may bring. Many of our authors have already made suggestions for future research in their individual chapters and collectively they have mapped out a rich and promising territory for the next generation to explore. A major recent development has been the growth in the number of collaborative applied research projects between linguists and the policing, security and legal professions and we expect major advances in the methods of collecting linguistic evidence. We therefore highlight just a few of the really important trends in research and application.
