ABSTRACT

A wealth of data supports strong links between eating disorders, traumatic experiences, subsequent posttraumatic stress disorder and/or its symptoms, and related comorbid conditions. Although there is no clear and universally accepted pathway to successfully treat this commonly occurring comorbidity, this chapter serves to review potential integrated treatment approaches that may guide clinicians to facilitate their patients’ full recovery. These approaches start with thorough medical and psychiatric assessments and require individualized treatment plans. Such plans are likely to involve the combination and integration of the principles of presently established evidence-based treatments, including cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy, prolonged exposure, dialectical behavior therapy, family-based therapy, and trauma-focused CBT. Case vignettes are provided to illustrate the application of these approaches.
