ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews evidence-based treatments for overweight/obesity in youth with a focus on the adaptation and application of core treatments for youth with eating disorders (EDs). We present treatment-specific rationales for the adaptation of particular ED interventions with regard to distinct and overlapping presentations of overweight/obesity in youth. This chapter also discusses weight considerations in ED presentations, with an emphasis on binge ED and atypical anorexia nervosa. We conclude with a summary of what data we have, what research suggests, and what is missing in the context of evidence-based treatments for weight disorders in youth separate from and comorbid with ED pathology. Suggestions for future directions in related research and clinical practice are also provided.
