ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews evidence-based treatments for eating-related issues that can co-occur in medical and non-eating disorder psychiatric conditions. A general framework for assessment of disordered eating is presented along with a discussion of common psychiatric (e.g., selective eating and autism spectrum disorder) and medical (e.g., food allergies, gastrointestinal conditions, and type 1 diabetes) conditions associated with eating issues. Current treatments for each condition are outlined including adaptations of eating disorder interventions, especially where there are gaps in the literature such as with the treatment of disordered eating secondary to medical issues. Given that eating-related issues are often comorbid in obesity, standard treatment and an emerging treatment model for childhood and adult obesity are discussed. Although well-established interventions for disordered eating outside of traditional eating disorders is lacking for many conditions, existing treatments can be modified or combined to provide effective treatment.
