ABSTRACT

The majority of recent scholarship on identity in the post-imperial West rightfully has sought to uncover the much more complex realities beneath the traditional tropes found in the early Byzantine literature. In this chapter, however, Stewart argues that analysing an ongoing belief amongst some Byzantines in the simplistic Roman/barbarian binarism can elucidate some of the ideology and impetus behind Justinian's campaigns of reconquest in North Africa and Italy.
