ABSTRACT

While there is extensive literature on natural disaster and climate change globally, and on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), there is little literature that links natural disasters and climate change to national security in PICs. To address this gap, the chapter uses the case studies of Kiribati and Tuvalu to explore the link between natural disasters, climate change and security. It focusses on issues such as injury to or death of individuals, economic damage and financial cost, food security, water security, biodiversity and ecosystems, internal relocation and nationhood security and sovereignty. It also provides policy options for PICs’ governments and overseas donor agencies and development partners.
