ABSTRACT

Scholars' research Moral Economies of Contemporary Monasteries in the Czech Republic and Austria dealt with cooperation between the economic and spiritual activity of monasteries. The movement experienced around the monastic grounds and the interviews with members of the community resulted in a realisation that monastic buildings, and the way the community thinks about them, clearly reflects the way in which they consider economic activities, spirituality, the memory of the order and its role in contemporary society. The monastery is embedded in nature in the way that, aside from an aerial view, never allows its buildings to be captured by sight all at once. The architecture of the monastery in Novy Dvur, as well as the contemplative life of the community – which remains in silence – is highly attractive to some visitors. The monasteries in Brevnov and Rajhrad are also shaped by their buildings.
