ABSTRACT

This chapter tries to answer the question of how CLIL teachers can integrate language teaching with content teaching in an effective manner. Our guiding principle in realising a balanced Soft CLIL class is focus on form (FonF), which refers to the pedagogical attempt in which learners' attention is drawn to language form without sacrificing their overall engagement in meaningful content- or task-based interaction. This chapter introduces the notion of FonF, its relationship to CLIL, types of FonF, techniques and procedures that can be used, and the timing issues as it pertains to lesson planning. The chapter ends with illustration of some concrete examples based on the lesson ideas introduced in Chapter 2. It is stressed that whichever types or techniques of FonF may be used with whatever timing, the success of FonF hinges upon the mental activity that occurs in the learners, the purpose being to establish form-meaning-function mapping that lies at the heart of the learners’ second-language development.
