ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the issue of authenticity and motivation as they relate to materials in Soft CLIL. The chapter begins with a definition of the key concepts, then continues with a discussion of the presence (and non-presence) of CLIL approaches in EFL materials, paying special attention to textbooks and other resources available to teachers off the shelf, with particular emphasis on how the label of CLIL has become a marketing gimmick for textbook publishers. I will also talk about ways in which materials might be used in a way which facilitates authenticity and motivation by drawing on a reservoir of central concepts which can be made personally relevant to learners’ lives. Finally, I will provide some practical suggestions for teachers and researchers wishing to further their own explorations of authenticity and motivation, and point out why doing so might, despite its initially unwelcoming terrain, prove to be fruitful and rewarding.
