ABSTRACT

This final concluding chapter wraps up all the preceding chapters by presenting their brief summaries and then discussing their implications for Soft CLIL in Japan and beyond. It also touches on the relationship between English as Lingua Franca (ELF) and CLIL, noting that they both aim at nurturing the learners’ multilingual and multicultural proficiency without requiring them to conform to the native-speaker-centric version of the English language. The chapter then highlights some of the major challenges for implementing and innovating with Soft CLIL from the perspectives of teachers, teacher trainers, students, material writers and developers, and test-makers and designers. This leads us to make suggestions for further research on Soft CLIL, emphasising the need to conduct process-oriented research that looks into developmental aspects of the needed change along with product-oriented research that examines the effects of various innovations made to implement Soft CLIL.
