ABSTRACT

Religion in schools will not, therefore, be an induction into belief. It is very important that we should recognize this, that we all should, Christian and Muslim. With regard to the material to be taught teachers must first make one general point. What has been said about the general, overall aims will apply, but the approach in a multi-faith school will differ in two respects. First, the multi-faith element will be present from the beginning. There can be no debate when to introduce material from Islam when there are Muslims in the class. Secondly, the multi-faith element must pervade every theme or topic as far as is possible. The assembly cannot be an act of worship: it may provide opportunities for sharing common awarenesses or concerns: it may provide occasions when Jews can explain Passover, or the Sikhs a Burpurb, or Christian Easter, to the rest of the school.
