ABSTRACT
It should be noticed in connection with labour questions that Jevons never lost sight of the vital distinction, so generally overlooked, between the horizontal cleavage of the industrial community into various grades of skilled and unskilled labour, managers, capitalists, landowners, and so forth, and the vertical cleavage into the agricultural interest, the coal interest, the iron interest, etc. Through neglect of this distinction a class movement and a trade movement may easily be confounded.
