ABSTRACT
I learned much from the paper by Rüdiger Soltwedel and Peter Trapp in particular and from the ensuing discussion. All along, I had been vaguely aware that a kind of petty protectionism permeates the German economy; but it was instructive to learn details of the many ways in which German policy impairs the functioning of the labor market, and with the consequences one might expect.
