ABSTRACT

118Mr. Shadrach Davis lives on a dirt road in the black farming community of Mileston. He is a farmer who owns ninety-seven acres of land. He also owns an oil well that sits at the edge of his fields. He is big, healthy, and strong from working in the field almost all his life. His hands are huge. Mr. Shadrach has dark skin and talks in a rough voice. He grew up in a family of five boys and one girl. His attitude is serious; he didn't crack any jokes during the interview. He was twenty-four years old when the Civil Rights Movement started in Holmes County. Along with his neighbor, Ralthus Hayes, Mr. Shadrach gave his all to make sure that blacks gained their equal rights.
