ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interview of Mrs. Bee Jenkines, an elderly woman. Mrs. Bee Jenkins played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement in Holmes County. For example, she has helped plan and participated in many marches. She first became a part of the Civil Rights Movement while she lived in Durant. She helped integrate the hospital, the cafes, and the train station. Mrs. Jenkins still participates in the Civil Rights Movement. She was a named plaintiff in a 1985 lawsuit against the City of Lexington. When others dropped their names from the lawsuit because of pressure from local white citizens, Mrs. Bee stood strong.
