ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an interview of Mrs. Cora Lee Roby and Mr. Vanderbilt Roby, who are one of the nicest couples. They were both born near the Old Pilgrim Rest community, where they live now. Mr. Vanderbilt is a tall, lanky man who always wears a hat. He raised cattle and farmed for a living. Mr. Vanderbilt is known for his courage. Mrs. Cora Lee is a short, warm, and gentle woman. Before she finished the eighth grade, she began teaching grammar school in her community. Both Robys were active in the Civil Rights Movement. The couple was one of the few families in the community to join the Movement early on. Freedom riders stayed with them during the summer of '64. The Ku Klux Klan burned a cross in their yard to scare them into giving up.
