ABSTRACT

In this second attempt to show how my biography has shaped my interests I will address the other major side of my academic career: my work on France. But I must say at the outset that I am not at all sure that I understand my relation to the study of France as clearly I understand why I chose to study world politics. The latter subject for me primarily involves intellectual questions; but the study of France raises fundamental issues of personal identity which I have certainly not fully elucidated.
