ABSTRACT

"Vietnam drifted in and out of human lives, taking them or sparing them like a headless, berserk taxi hack, without evident cause, a war fought for uncertain reasons." The senselessness and insanity of the Vietnam War was something every US soldier had to come to terms with when he or she returned home. With great courage, against the seductive forces of forgetfulness and myth, many Vietnam veterans struggled toward an articulation of the complex experience of the war they fought in Vietnam and its impact on their lives. The homecoming was to work according to script and be publicly wholesome no matter what the truth was behind the scenes. In a sense, the veterans are undertaking their "last mission," and sometimes finding they have more in common with some of their opponents of twenty years ago than with some of their peers at home.
