ABSTRACT

Since the late 1970s, studies on the mainland economy have proliferated on an unprecedented scale mainly as a result of several recent developments. This chapter presents studies by scholars outside the mainland and only those directly relevant to the theme of the Thirteenth Sino-American Conference on Mainland China, that is, economic reform and its impact on the People’s Republic of China's economic future. It focuses on studies in four main areas: overall assessment of economic growth, measurement of economic growth, development problems in two key sectors, and models of the mainland economy. In addition to studies of the mainland economy in the aggregate, there are important contributions to the study of some critical sectors such as agriculture, energy, foreign trade, technology, and population. One important determinant of economic growth is science and technology. To fully utilize the science and technology resources, the State Council promulgated regulations to encourage transfers of technical personnel.
