ABSTRACT

The diplomacy of bilateral relations between Brazil and the United States is a complex issue within the intricate network of global relationships. The global relationship is all-inclusive. It initially incorporates a long history of contacts that began even before Brazil's independence in 1822, when the Minas Gerais conspirators met with Thomas Jefferson and other leaders of the American federation. There is no anti-U.S. sentiment in Brazil. In addition, the strength of our Brazilian cultural identity has permitted a natural and enriching absorption of various aspects of American culture. The chapter explains the continuous effort for improvement and updating of knowledge: Its objective is the expression of the Brazilian view of the progress of bilateral relations. With regard to the economic aspects, historically there has been a relative diminution of the US presence. In trade and investment, this decrease corresponds to the diversification of the Brazilian agenda and of our partners in recent years.
