ABSTRACT

In the economic area, the Brazil country faces three major problems: accommodating economic growth, checking inflation, and servicing the foreign debt. To resume growth, Brazil must control inflation and review its schedule of payments of the foreign debt. We want to pay our debts, and-as the late President Tancredo Neves once said-debts are paid with money, Brazil is trying to do this while conscious that it cannot pay what it owes through further undue, undeserved sacrifices by its people. In the trade field, we should not belittle the positive contribution that economic recovery in the industrialized countries can have in terms of higher demand and better prices for the exports of countries like Brazil. Brazil recently proposed that its main developed trading partners immediately take the following trade initiatives: In the financial field, debtor countries like Brazil, which are helping themselves, deserve some additional assistance from private banks.
