ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the structure and functions of the Bomb Disposal Unit, then a general survey of terrorist activity in Israel is given: factors effecting terrorist activities, and mode of terrorist operations. It focuses on counter-terrorism inside the borders of Israel, although that terrorism most often begins with a border infiltration from a neighboring region. The main task of the Israel Bomb Disposal Unit begins after the terrorist is already in the country. The unit’s responsibilities can be divided into work in the following categories: explosives and boobytraps, throwing of hand grenades and incendiary bottles, mining, terrorist motivated arson, firing of rockets and artillery missles and hoax bombs or false charges. Tourists and tourist sites have been terrorist objectives, as have been military and police facilities and personnel. A geographic analysis of terrorist incidents in Israel, there have been markedly fewer incidents within the pre-1967 borders of the country.
