ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a proto-type video-disc based fingerprint search system in use at the Israel National Police Criminal Identification Laboratory. Criminal investigation is characterized by analysis of various types of primarily visual evidence that accumulates at the scene of the crime and is provided by witnesses. In a typical access control task a person requesting entry must identify himself by insertion of an identification card in a reader and placement of a finger on a scanner. Fingerprints are unique to an individual and are difficult to gorge and conceal. A proven methodology has been developed to identify an individual based on a latent print: the print inadvertantly left at the scene of crime. The Criminal Identification Laboratory plans to install a number of work-stations for the fingerprint as well as the other image album based applications.
