ABSTRACT

The communities of Antioquia tend to have very similar social and economic structures and form the socionatural region in question, one of small to medium size family coffee estates called fincas. The municipio of Jardin lies in a narrow valley located at the head of the San Juan River in a highland rainforest zone. Much of the rainforest still remains on the tops of the mountains adding to the spectacular beauty of the region. The concept of "management style" was derived from John W. Bennett's work on farmers and ranchers in Jasper, Saskatchewan. Management style is a "behavioral strategy" influenced by situational factors which might change through time depending on the cycle of the "enterprise". The term "human capital" is used in reference to the community infrastructure having to do with the development and protection of human beings: schools, hospitals, unions, police and fire protection, extension agencies, voluntary associations.
