ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines some of the most crucial aspects of the European Union's relations with the developing world, including human rights, gender and immigration. It addresses the fundamental issues of human rights, gender, immigration, and the role of non-governmental organizations as providers of development services in European Union (EU) development policy. The book explores the linkages between EU human rights and development cooperation policies. It analyses a subject which has attained a higher political profile than, but is too rarely seen as a development question. The book examines issues surrounding the European Union's expanding relations with non-governmental organisations (NGOs). It focuses on two case studies - South Africa and Cambodia. South African NGOs like the Kagiso Trust initially exercised a great deal of control over EU aid projects.
