ABSTRACT
Christianity and the Church must start off with a massive mea culpa when it comes to speaking about their records relating to democracy and human rights. To acknowledge God as Lord and Creator is to rule out forever the possibility of legitimizing authoritarian and totalitarian rule by any human being however powerful. God is God and human beings, even powerful human dictators, are not God but mere mortals who will end up in South Africa as part of the flotsam and jetsam of history. Human beings, all human beings, simply by virtue of creation are creatures of infinite value, a value and worth that is intrinsic to who they are. Christ’s followers would seek a world order that would ensure that God’s children were able to live decent lives in a salubrious setting with adequate housing for a decent family life without overcrowding so that there would be privacy enough for each to have space to be human.
