ABSTRACT

In many ways, the analyses of the commercial sector energy demand and electricity demand are the most difficult to understand for two primary reasons. First, the definition of the sector is not always the same in the two main data bases that are collected for this sector. Second, the composition of the sector is highly segmented. By definition, it includes all nonmanufacturing business establishments: motels and hotels, restaurants, wholesale and retail businesses, and health, social, and educational institutions. Some analysts include business activities that take place outside of both public and private building structures such as street lighting, swimming pools, and construction sites. From this heterogeneous composition the most intensive electricity users are food sales, health care, and office facilities.
