ABSTRACT

Science and technology have wrought so many changes in the way we live and in the way we perceive the world that no educated person can afford to be ignorant of the character and limits of science, and no person ignorant of the character and limits of science can be called educated. Technology has brought all of us closer together through the worldwide communications network it has created, which makes it impossible for us to ignore each other even if we wanted to. But besides an understanding of science, anyone who aspires to be educated in today's world must be thoroughly familiar with, and must understand other countries and other cultures. International understanding is not simply a polite idea; it is a necessity for survival in our nuclear world.
