ABSTRACT

Science and math students from the University of California studying in various English universities discover that in math and science, not only is the method of teaching different, but also the conceptual approach is often foreign to them. Studying abroad for a season is inevitably a deeply moving personal experience, as well. The experience of leaving one's country and spending a period in another always evokes a struggle with feelings of separation, even for those who have long since established their own independence. With respect to the transformation of one's feeling towards his or her home culture, there are two commonly voiced views. One is that the student becomes somewhat expatriated from his or her home country and correspondingly positive about the host country. The other, in opposition, is that the student develops more national pride towards his home country and, possibly, hostility towards the host country.
