Both general reference and thematic maps are used in human dimensions research and resource management. General reference maps that deal with the human dimensions of natural resource management are common-county and city zoning maps, state highway maps geared for tourists, hiking maps are examples. Two general reference maps of South Florida provide insight into the role these tools can play in natural resource management. Thematic maps that reveal the distribution of species, habitats are proving important, as the loss of biodiversity has become a critical environmental concern.
