ABSTRACT

The issues of acid rain, global climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion and fisheries destruction are a few examples of the international and cross-country linkages now present in many natural resource issues. Moreover, there exists a number of other barriers that hinder the implementation of Human Dimensions Research. A number of challenges face the implementation of Human Dimensions Research within natural resource management. Within this framework, barriers that lie primarily outside of most Human Dimensions Research efforts can be considered exogenous barriers, while those barriers that are typically part of HDR efforts can be considered endogenous barriers. Examples of exogenous barriers include low recognition of the importance and value of Human Dimensions Research by other scientific disciplines, subsequent lack of adequate or equitable funding from governmental and non-governmental organizations, and lack of data bases that are compatible with those generated through the natural and physical sciences.
