ABSTRACT

Human dimensions is one of the newest areas of emphasis in the evolving field of wildlife management. This chapter provides an overview of the "people management" element of wildlife management. It outlines the philosophical orientation of a human dimensions approach to wildlife management, describes the practical utility of human dimensions in wildlife management, and provides examples that illustrate this utility. The need for quality human dimensions information exists at all stages of the decision-making process and at all levels of agency decision-making. Once the overall goals of a wildlife management program are clearly specified, the second step in the decision-making process involves clarifying the problem and, in a more proactive sense, noting the range of available opportunities. Human dimensions efforts can be particularly helpful in enhancing the effectiveness of I&E programs.
