ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the water demand and supply management in the region, focusing on how the increasing water shortage problem has been resolved. It investigates the present status of Han River pollution and efforts taken by the government to alleviate the causes and effects of water pollution. The chapter analyzes the water-related government organizations and institutional arrangements established for managing water resources in Korea. Water resource management can be classified into four categories: water resource development, river management, water resource use, and water quality control. Seoul was obliged to purchase more raw water from Paldang Reservoir, which is located upstream on the Lower Han River. Increasing demand for water in and around Seoul can no longer be satisfied by the waterworks of local governments. The Korea Water Resources Corporation sells raw water and treated water to the water authorities of local governments through areawide waterworks.
