ABSTRACT

Oneida is in Outagamie County, and adjoining it to the east is Hobart in Brown County. Five miles to the west, in Oneida, is a one-story building, surrounded by trees, that is the headquarters of the Oneida Tribal Police. The creation and growth of the Oneida Tribal Police, which has 20 sworn officers, corresponded to the economic development of the tribe. Thousands of young Oneida men and women are working and drawing paychecks instead of receiving welfare checks. The two counties, the town governments of Oneida and Hobart, and Green Bay formed a commission to challenge the jurisdiction of the Oneida Tribe over the lands included within the boundaries of the reservation as it had been established in the 19th century. A key step in the growing professional relationship between the tribal police and other law enforcement agencies came about when Brown County formed a multijurisdictional group.
