ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Asian labor migration to the Middle East from the perspective of the oil-rich countries. It outlines the complex set of economic and noneconomic determinants of the migration of Asian workers to the Middle East. The chapter also examines the most recent developments in the oil-rich countries that have some bearing on labor flows from Asian sources. It deals with a qualitative assessment of the demand outlook for Asian workers. According to Charles B. Keely, East Asian exporters showed greater organizational skills in supplying self-contained work forces as a part of project export packages, as well as success in undertaking large-scale construction projects and efficiency in meeting deadlines. The determinants of Asian labor migration to the Arab world are to be found in each of the labor-importing and labor-exporting countries in the Middle East and in the Asian labor-exporting countries as well.
