ABSTRACT

One of the goals of the Río Hondo Project's 1974 field season was an east-west transect survey across Albion Island between the main and secondary channel of the Río Hondo. Albion Island was part of a regional system of wetland agriculture and settlement. Only the integration of regional settlement pattern data associated with areas of wetland fields in both Mexico and northern Belize can ultimately lead to an understanding of Albion Island prehistory and its significance in the evolution of Lowland Maya society. The chronological interval between A.D. 700 and A.D. 1000, the Late Classic and Terminal Classic periods, was the time of peak population on Albion Island. Throughout the entire known sequence for Albion Island the closest ceramic ties are with neighboring sites in northern Belize and with Chetumal Bay. Most of the structures identified along the Albion Island survey brecha are at San Antonio.
