ABSTRACT

The vegetation transect records composition and structure of current vegetation in relation to the topography of the prehistoric wetland fields of the project area. The location of the transect, selected to represent vegetation types characteristic of the area, identifies the most common species present. The transect, which was located approximately 300 m northeast of the village of San Antonio, was conducted in 1974. The area covered by the transect is low and wet and less than 1 m above sea level. The transect data were collected in late June during the rainy season. At this time of year, the prehistoric canals, which have partially filled in over the years, are more visible because of standing water. Several methods for identifying collected specimens were employed. Initially, the transect was traversed with local residents of San Antonio, who were able to supply common Maya and Spanish names for many of the species.
