ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the type of violence against women noted in contemporary India is clearly within the mode of Hindu cultural practice. The main vehicle for political mobilization of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh/Vishwa Hindu Parishad/ Bharatiya Janata Party has been marches from one end of India to another. The economists who believe an unfettered market economy will solve all problems see the potential buying power of this emerging middle class as the determining factor on the horizon of India's economic miracle. Escalating violence against women and minorities has become endemic in contemporary India. The confrontational techniques used by the Hindu Fundamentalist organizations at all political rallies, their overt support for killing minorities, had resulted in hundreds and thousands of deaths. The impetus to the education of women in India came most vigorously from the Utilitarians and their explicit equation of "civilization" with "the position of women.".
