ABSTRACT

Recreation research in natural resources is relatively young. It dates primarily from about 1960, stimulated by the activity of the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission and the establishment of recreation projects in the experiment stations of the USDA Forest Service, and has progressed since then. To be sure, some notable natural resource recreation research was undertaken before 1960, but a significant thrust dates from approximately that year. When look specifically at the wildland-urban interface in the context of management and research in several issues come to light. Researchers need to recognize the changing management scene and the new paradigm for management that is needed. From this they need to explore the implications of a new management paradigm for research and the research paradigm that has been employed. It would appear that a new research paradigm is needed, one that focuses on larger scale problems and one which encompasses an integration of the social and natural sciences.
