ABSTRACT

Peace continues to be a powerful wish and desire, a passion with millions, a conviction as well, deeply felt and aspired for. The interwar period saw the competition for national supremacy in—and beyond—Europe find its nadir in the rise of national fascism; the war itself moved the locus of this competition outside the European framework. The peace movement in Europe is one instance where a single focus has emerged for various groups, with both the Greens and the feminists joining forces with peace activists. The activists of the peace movement in Europe are seeking common cause with the struggles for sustainable development, social justice, economic equity and human dignity launched by various grassroots movements in the third World and some of the socialist countries. The whole effort at countering world militarisation, including much of the effort of the peace movement, is too fragmented and partial to meet the technological nemesis head-on.
